In the year 2000, my father was diagnosed with mesothelioma, prompting my parents to relocate to Southern California to be closer to me, their only child. I traveled to their home in Laredo, Texas, to help them prepare for the move. Unfortunately, my dad ended up in the hospital, leaving my mother to spend her days by his side. This left me alone in their three-bedroom house, deciding what belongings could fit into a small one-bedroom assisted living apartment. When my mother returned home in the evenings, she often insisted that items I had set aside for recycling, redistribution, or disposal should accompany them. At that time, we were unaware that she was already showing early signs of dementia.
After the move, Steve and I had to return to work, and the boxes remained unopened. A month later, we moved my parents from the assisted living community into our home, while much of their belongings went into storage. We kept the storage unit until after they both had passed.
